As a Black man who has long believed in the power of unity, activism, and the pursuit of justice, I find myself increasingly disappointed with the state of leadership within our community today. I remember a time when marches, boycotts, and collective action were our tools to demand change—when we rallied behind leaders who shared our struggles and aspirations, believing that their voices could elevate us all.
We fought hard for representation, for the chance to have our interests heard in halls of power, and for African-Americans to occupy positions of influence. We believed that placing capable, dedicated leaders in positions of authority would pave the way toward a better future for our community. Yet, today, I see a different reality—one where some of those in leadership roles seem unprepared, irresponsible, and, frankly, erratic.
At times, our leaders have been irresponsible, immature, immoral, and incompetent. They have failed to uphold the standards of integrity and responsibility that are essential for effective leadership. Instead of fostering unity and progress, some appear more concerned with personal gain or political posturing, undermining the very goals we fought so hard to achieve.
It’s disheartening to witness individuals entrusted with the responsibility of guiding our community exhibit such shortcomings. Leadership is about accountability, integrity, and a clear vision—qualities that seem increasingly scarce. This pattern is damaging. It sows distrust and disillusionment among our people, especially among the youth who look to us for guidance. We cannot afford to have our community’s future in the hands of those who lack the discipline or moral compass to lead responsibly.
Our community deserves leaders who are committed to service, who understand the complexities of our challenges, and who prioritize the collective good over personal ambitions. We need to hold our leaders accountable—demand transparency, integrity, and effective action. It’s time to revisit our standards and expectations, and to support those who demonstrate true leadership qualities.
The fight for equality and progress is ongoing, and it requires strong, competent leaders to continue that march. We must invest in and uplift individuals who are committed to genuine change, and we must be vigilant in calling out those who fall short.
Our community’s future depends on it. Let’s recommit ourselves to the principles of responsible leadership and work together to build a stronger, more united community.
