Fred A. Childs was born Sept. 30, 1950, in Isola to H.C. Childs and Marie Hill Childs. After “Freddie” graduated from Isola High School in Isola, he attended Mississippi Delta Community College on a football scholarship, also playing baseball there for the Trojans. Freddie joined the Miss. Army National Guard in 1970 and served stateside during the Vietnam Conflict. He farmed cotton and soybeans with his father. Later, Freddie became a catfish farmer with his father and brothers, Floyd Childs and Jerry “PeeWee” Childs. After his father’s death, Freddie and his son, Allen, farmed together row-cropped cotton, corn, soybeans, milo and farmed catfish. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Shirley Childs; and brothers, Floyd Thomas Childs and Jerry “PeeWee” Childs. Freddie is survived by his children, Fred Allen Childs of Isola, and Hope Gillison (Loyd) of Springdale, Ark.; and grandchildren, Britney Elizabeth Childs (Brandon Kugle), David Addison Childs, Preston Lane Childs, Bowen Loyd Gillison and Jaxon Burnley Gillison. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Wilma O. Childs, and several nephews, nieces and cousins. A visitation was held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Mortimer Funeral Home, Belzoni, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Register online and express condolences at www.mortimerfh.com.
