16-year-old charged as adult in 17-year-old's Christmas Eve shooting death

The Indianola Police Department announced Thursday that a suspect in the murder of 17-year-old Aquavius Hines is in custody.

According to IPD Chief Edrick Hall, Stedarrish Herman of Moorhead turned himself in and will face manslaughter charges in connection with the Christmas Eve slaying that took place reportedly in the vicinity of Roosevelt Street and Pershing Avenue in the early morning hours Tuesday.

Herman is being charged as an adult in the homicide.

Moorhead Police Chief Fred Randle, Hall said, worked with the family, and he surrendered himself to Randle, who transported him to IPD headquarters on Christmas Day.

Hines was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at South Sunflower County Hospital as a result of injuries from gunshot wounds he received earlier that morning.

On Christmas Eve, Hall said the call came in shortly after 1 a.m.

The preliminary investigation indicated that a friend of Hines had placed him in a car and took him to the hospital after the shooting.

Hines’ murder was officially the sixth of 2019 in Indianola.

Basketball practice has already started for some at North Sunflower Academy.
