Indianola incumbent Mayor Steve Rosenthal has retained his seat for a third term.
Rosenthal, who has won the last two mayoral elections in the city, finished the night with 1,203 votes to Independent candidate Jimmy Smith’s 398 votes, counting absentees.
These numbers did not reflect affidavits nor curbside votes.
Rosenthal said after the votes were tallied that he plans to pursue a large street overhaul project in the next four years, among other endeavors such as bringing new businesses to the city and promoting economic development.
The longtime mayor failed to secure enough votes in the first primary election to claim the Democratic nomination, but he later defeated challenger Vivian Jenkins in the Oct. 31 runoff.
Rosenthal was also opposed by Mario Robinson in the first primary election.
Jimmy Smith, a native of Sunflower County and a veteran businessman, announced his candidacy for mayor on the Independent ticket earlier this fall.
