A Friday morning house fire left an Indianola family grieving the loss of two family members.
According to Sgt. Irish Johnson, public information officer at the Indianola police Department, Louise Perkins, 65 and her four-year-old grandson Taylen Roberts died amid the blaze.
According to Johnson, at approximately 12:30 a.m., police arrived and found flames coming through the roof of a home at 113 Galaxie Drive and spoke to 42-year-old Timothy Perkins who said his mother and his nephew were still in the house. At that point, police notified the Indianola fire department and MedStat emergency services.
There were reportedly six people in the house at the time of the fire. Timothy Perkins told police all of them got out of the house except for the four-year-old and when Louise realized that her grandson was still inside she ran back into the burning house to get him.
They were found in a back bedroom on the floor unresponsive and later pronounced dead. No one else was injured. Johnson said emergency responders were informed that someone in the house had started cooking but fell asleep and left the stove on.
State fire marshals were called in to investigate.
