A group of 18 students, from the Urban School of San Francisco, made a stopover at Gentry High School on Monday as part of the Civil Rights study. The students began their observations at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis before visiting the campus of Ole Miss and making their way to Indianola.
Jonathan Howland, Dean of Faculty for the school said the primary focus of the trip is music and literature. He said the tour is a way to “get on the grounds of where things happened.”
The young people visited several places in Indianola and were treated to a type of potluck supper at Sookie’s that was sponsored by several local businesses and individuals.
Their next stop is in Jackson at the Two Mississippi Museums before heading on to New Orleans and then back to San Francisco.
