The unofficial results are in from Tuesday’s mid-term election and based on the unofficial counts, there is a new judge in town.
In the Chancery Judge 9-2 race, Attorney Debra Giles is showing a pronounced victory over incumbent Jane Weathersby.
The 9-2 district covers areas of Sunflower, Washington and Humphreys counties and Giles received the larger number of votes in each for a total of 7,593 votes or 59.2 percent opposed to Weathersby’s 5,233 or 40.8 percent.
In the heavily populated District 31 Representative contest there is an apparent runoff in the makings for Otis L. Anthony II and Shannon D. Brown. The 31st district meanders through portions of Sunflower, Humphreys, Washington and even a small portion of Bolívar counties. At last count, Anthony was holding about 1,611 votes—22.56 percent and Brown had 1,400 of the cast ballots or 19.6 percent.
In the U.S. Senate race, Sunflower County voters picked David Baria over incumbent Senator Roger Wicker, who was the eventual winner, by a count of 4,523 to 2,443. Also in that race, Danny Bedwell received 77 votes and Shawn O’Hara garnered 74 votes.
Mike Espy was the dominant candidate in the U.S. Senate special election in Sunflower County. He won out over incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, 5,026 to 1,896. Chris McDaniel received 374 votes in the county and Tobey Bernard Bartee brought in 98.
Overall, Espy and Hyde-Smith forced a Nov. 27 runoff.
With 5,709 votes, Congressman Bennie Thompson gained an easy victory over opponents Troy Ray and Irving Harris who netted 1,176 and 330 respectively.
Thompson claimed his 13th term in office Tuesday night.
In the Court of Appeals race a runoff is possible because at the last update, statewide, neither of the top two candidates had 51 percent of the votes.
Deborah McDonald was leading with a total of 49 percent followed by Eric Charles Hawkins with 28 percent and Ceola James was bringing up the rear with just over 23 percent.
