The annual Headstone Stories presentation was cancelled due to inclement weather last Friday and Saturday. The academic program that introduces Indianola Academy students to archives, primary sources and historical research, while educating the community about local history, was scheduled to start 10 a.m., Saturday, but the heavy rainfall made the conditions at the Indianola City Cemetery less than conducive for the activity.
However, three students donned their costumes and stepped into character for a sampling of what the community missed out on.
Pictured above are Indianola Academy students who participated in this year’s Headstone Stories project. Liam Ledbetter portrayed William E. Johnson (1844-1927). He was a farmer from Indianola that served as a soldier in the Civil War. Andy Bowen represented Matthew Devere Gilmer (1886-1926), a grocer from Indianola and Parker Branch stood as John Howard Hough (1856-1932), a pharmacist from Indianola, who was also a farmer and a realtor.
