The Bible says, children are a blessing and a gift from above, and seven year-old Luke Miller has stepped up to provide affirmation.
The first-grader has taken it upon himself to be a blessing to the victims of Hurricane Harvey, which wreaked destruction upon Texas a few weeks ago.
Luke has been collecting gift cards and has received numerous donations of the spendable plastic as well as cash to buy more.
The assiduous adolescent has amassed over 50 cards so far with varying amounts.
His mother, Annie Parker Miller, said some of the donations were as much as $100. He has reached out to church members, family and persons in his school and the community.
Luke said the idea came to him after he heard his mom and dad talking about the storms and flooding so he asked, “Can we go to Texas?”
Luke said his mom told him that is was probably too big of a task for the two of them so they reached out to Pastor Veronica Pritchard at Delta Grace and partnered with them.
Not only has the seven-year-old conducted and led the whole campaign, he also designed and colored a greeting card, complete with a personal note and scripture from Joshua 1:9, that will accompany each gift card.
Luke and his mom are traveling to Texas Oct. 12, and he plans to hand out the cards the next day.
Delta Grace has established a mail-in option for those who wish to support Luke in his endeavor.
Gift cards or donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 218, Sunflower, Attention: Luke Miller, dropped off at Delta Grace in Sunflower or dropped off at the First United Methodist Church office in Indianola.
Pritchard said she is both amazed and delighted by the giving-spirit coming from someone so young.
