Sunflower County resident and Republican candidate for Congressional District 2 B.C. Hammond was eliminated from the race during Tuesday’s primary vote.
His opponents, Brian Flowers and Carey Thomas, will head to a runoff March 31.
Hammond did receive 290 (54% of the vote) votes on Tuesday in Sunflower County, according to preliminary tallies not counting about 30 affidavit votes that had not been counted as of press time.
Lewis B. Douglas defeated Morgan McDowell for the Yazoo Mississippi Delta Levee Commissioner post, getting 63% of the vote.
The rest of the Sunflower County ballot mirrored the state in a lot of ways, especially in the Democratic primary, where Joe Biden won the state by 81%. He received 82% of the Sunflower County vote.
Mike Espy, who won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, received 95% of the vote locally.
Bennie Thompson, the incumbent Democratic candidate for Congressional District 2 won 94% of the vote here.
The Republican turnout on Tuesday was significantly lower than the Democratic participation.
President Donald Trump won the county and the state. He received 98% of the vote locally.
Cindy Hyde-Smith, the unopposed incumbent in the Republican race for U.S. Senate, won handily as well.
