C.J. Hampton, a former gridiron standout at the University of Mississippi, has been hired as the new defensive backs coach at Mississippi Delta Community College.
Hampton comes to Moorhead fresh off a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he coached cornerbacks for the Bulldogs.
In 2019, Hampton was part of a Gulf Coast staff that led the country in total defense, allowing only 191.1 yards per game. The Bulldogs also finished second in the country in scoring defense, as they only allowed 12.3 points per game.
Along with past coaching success, Hampton brings a highly-decorated playing past with him to the Delta. As a four-time letterman at Ole Miss (2014-2017), he finished his career as a free safety with 83 tackles, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a tackle for loss.
The former four-star recruit was a U.S. Army All-American as a senior and was chosen to play in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game after recording 111 tackles and four interceptions as a senior at perennial power Meridian High School. Hampton helped lead the Wildcats to the 6A semifinals in his final season and was a Dandy Dozen selection by The Clarion-Ledger.
“I am very proud to be a part of the MDCC athletics family,” Hampton said. “I know that hard work produces results, and I can’t wait to get after it with this team.”
Hampton will live in Moorhead.
