A morning death at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman does not appear to involve foul play.
According to Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton, inmate Lamar Kitchens passed away in the hospital unit at around 10:50 a.m. on Thursday.
The following is Burton’s statement in its entirety.
“This morning at 11:00 am, I was notified by security staff at Parchman that an offender had died in Unit 42, which is the hospital. I arrived at Unit 42 at 11:54 am and began my investigation. The offender, Lamar Kitchens was pronounced dead at 10:50 am by the physician on duty. The offender had been a patient in the hospital unit for some time. I do not suspect foul play is involved in this death; however, as with every in-custody death, the offender is being transferred to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner for autopsy in accordance with state law. Official cause and manner of death are pending autopsy results. Please join me in praying for this offender’s family.”
