The Gentry High Rams baseball team is playoffs bound – and it began Thursday.
After completing their season with a third place finish in Region 3-4A baseball play, the 8-3 Gentry High Rams will take a long road trip today to Mooreville High School to open their 4A State baseball playoff competition.
With this three hour trek to far Northeast Mississippi, the Rams will take the field at 5 p.m. to take on the Troopers in the opening game of this doubleheader.
A habitual contender for state championships, the Troopers enter the playoffs as the number 2 seed from Region 2; a seeding earned by way of their 15-9 record.
While the second game of this three game series is slated to be played at 7 p.m. today, if a third game is necessary, that series-deciding game will begin at 4 p.m. Friday on the Gentry High field.
Should the Rams win this series, they will move on to next week’s second round action against the winner of this weekend’s New Hope – Senatobia match-up.
The Rams enter the playoffs hoping to rebound from this past week’s play which was not kind to Head Coach Timothy Holmes’ squad. With playoff seeding on the line, the Rams suffered a pair of 10 run losses to close out their Region 3-4A schedule.
While Monday night saw them drop a 13-3 decision to Tunica Rosa Fort High, last Friday dealt the Rams a 15-5 loss to regional champ Yazoo City High School.
In their loss to Yazoo City, the Rams were limited to three hits while the Indians overcame a 5-1 deficit after two innings to claim the game.
Leading the hitting for Gentry High with a double apiece were Malek Galvin and Tyreek Tutwiler while Kylon Bush registered a single against the Yazoo City pitcher.
