Defense has lately become a huge part of a winning recipe for the Thomas E. Edwards High Tigers.
Recording their second shutout victory in the past three weeks, last Friday night the Tigers earned a 20-0 Region 3-3A Homecoming victory over Humphreys County High of Belzoni.
Impressively, the Tigers have also only allowed one touchdown within that three week time span as they head into this week’s open date.
Owning a 4-4, 1-1 record, the extra time will allow Head Coach Damaris Mitchell’s squad to prepare for the season’s all-important final two games of the season.
These dates are filled with regional contests against very competitive teams in the form of Coahoma Early College (formerly Coahoma AHS) of Clarksdale and Winona High School. The results of these games will also generate the final seedings for the November 8 opening of the 3A playoffs
In last Friday’s win over now 0-7, 0-2 Humphreys County High, the Tigers scored in each of the initial three quarters of the game.
Reaching the end zone on the game’s first offensive possession, the Tigers’ offensive line paved the way for what proved to be a 75 yard drive.
Finishing the long march down the field with a five yard touchdown run was Shemar Nevells. Along with the first of this night’s two PAT kicks from Jeremiah Surney, the Tigers owned a 7-0 lead. A margin which ultimately proved to be all needed to claim the game..
In the second period, the Tigers used their air attack to complete a 63 yard scoring drive. On this occasion, it was a 30 yard TD pass from quarterback Joseph Perez to wide receiver Ja’Kell Allen. This scoring connection gave the Tigers a 13-0 lead as they headed to the dressing room at halftime.
The final score of the game occurred when a third period 70 yard drive was completed by Perez as the quarterback crashed over from two yards out for the touchdown.
The Tigers’ defense then continued its denial of the end zone to the visiting Cowboys as the game moved to its conclusion.
