As I grow older, I reminisce about the days of my youth and the days of my children’s youth.
These are fond memories on both parts because what I remember most are the times I spent with my mom and dad when I was young, and the days I spent with my children during their formative years.
These memories are about spending time together and not about material gifts given one way or another.
As I reach the golden years of my life and try to understand what my children will gain from me when I go and live with the Lord, I was awed by what my oldest daughter told me.
“Daddy, what you and momma leave us will not have near the impact of what you have already given us. You gave us your time, your love, and you taught us how to love in return.”
These were some of the most precious words I have ever heard. Most parents wonder if they have raised their children in a manner pleasing to God.
Even on the days we spent with our children and it seemed to be a waste of time on our part, it may have been the best of times on their part and a remembrance that will always remain with them.
Many parents of today try to buy the love of their children and most of the time these turn into failed relationships. What children need and desire the most is the time and nurture that only parents can give. In today’s world many households must have two incomes to survive and be part of society. This is what is dictated to us from the world.
The sad part of today’s society is that all the extra money we make goes into something meaningless and, in most cases, something we can do without. Children need love, time with parents, and guidance from their mentors.
Always remember that you may be only one person in the world, but to one person, especially to a child, you may be the world.
Give of yourself and your time to your children and train them in the way of the Lord.
