The Fairley Steele Foundation proudly presented the 3rd Annual Christeen Steele Education Award to Kenton Hawkins, a graduating senior at Thomas Edwards High School, during the school’s Class Night ceremony held on May 21.
Hawkins, the son of Kent and Nicole Hawkins, was selected for the prestigious award based on his thoughtful application and essay, which highlighted his commitment to education, service, and the betterment of his community. The annual award honors the memory and legacy of Christeen Steele, who dedicated 37 years of her life to education in Sunflower and the surrounding areas.
Founded and sponsored by the children of the late Gary and Christeen Steele, the award is presented through the Fairley Steele Foundation, led by Executive Director Tina L. Steele. The foundation provides a cash scholarship to support the recipient’s transition to college or trade school.
“Kenton’s essay reflected maturity, purpose, and a power of resilience and change,” said Ms. Steele. “His words remind us why this award was established — to honor students who show not only academic promise but also dedicated to overcoming odds and succeeding .”
Ms. Steele noted. “The Fairley Steele Foundation remains committed to helping our students succeed beyond high school and to ensuring that the legacy of great educators like my mother continues to inspire future generations.”
The Christeen Steele Education Award continues to grow in impact, encouraging students across Sunflower County to pursue higher education and community service with purpose and pride.
