The changes are coming.
For when the new 2025-26 school year commences this upcoming August, every athletic team in Sunflower County will find itself competing against some new district competition.
Beginning on the local front, Gentry High School athletes will become members of Region 4-4A, a change which includes three new regional opponents.
Standing in the way of Gentry High teams earning any regional crowns will be Greenwood High School, Kosciusko High School, Louisville High School and Yazoo City High School.
The Indians of Yazoo City are the only regional competition remaining in place to once again compete against Gentry High squads.
Dropped as regional foes this coming year are Greenville High, Holmes County Central High of Lexington, Cleveland Central High, and Canton High School.
At Indianola Academy, the Colonels will compete in District 2-2A in football while all other sports will find IA a part of District 1-2A competition.
In football, the Colonels’ new alignment will find them competing against Carroll Academy, Greenville Christian School, and Greenville St. Joseph High School for the district crown.
Dropped as district foes are Benton Academy, Canton Academy, Central Holmes Christian School of Lexington, and West Memphis (Ark.) Christian School.
However, the last three on that list will remain as regular season non-district competition.
Meanwhile, in all other sports IA’s district competition will consist of Delta Academy of Marks, Greater Praise Christian Academy of Memphis, North Sunflower Academy, and Regents School of Oxford.
At North Sunflower Academy, the Rebels’ District 1-1A football lineup will include Deer Creek School of Arcola, Delta Academy of Marks, and Delta Streets Academy of Greenwood.
The Rebels’ District 1-2A competition in all other sports consists of Delta Academy of Marks, Greater Praise Christian Academy of Memphis, Indianola Academy, and Regents School of Oxford.
At Thomas Edwards High in Ruleville, the Tigers’ Region 3-3A lineup is virtually the same as the past with one exception.
While Amanda Elzy High of Greenwood, Humphreys County of Belzoni, and Yazoo County High once again compete with the Tigers for the regional crown, O’Bannon High of Greenville becomes a new regional competitor.
The Green Wave will replace Winona High School in region play.
