A district championship is on the line tonight at Legion Field for the Indianola Academy Colonels football team.
With a 7 p.m. kickoff, the 3-6, 3-0 Colonels will take on the 5-4, 3-0 Canton Academy Panthers to decide who will wear the District 2-3A crown this season.
While also celebrating Senior Night, the Colonels are hoping to add a second consecutive victory to their win column tonight.
Last Friday saw the Colonels bring a three-game losing streak to a halt with their 42-24 road decision over the Black Knights of West Memphis Christian School (1-8, 0-4).
This district victory over the Arkansas school saw the Colonels register their most points scored in a game this season.
This offensive output was led by sophomore Ty Killebrew’s four touchdowns, 201-yard rushing effort.
Meanwhile, that same night Canton Academy fell to a powerful Riverfield Academy squad from Rayville, Louisiana.
That 29-6 loss to the District 3-3A Raiders snapped a two-game win streak the Panthers had been enjoying.
The Colonels will also enter tonight’s game with the Panthers bent on avenging the pair of losses suffered last season to the Canton Academy squad.
IA fell to the Panthers in the regular season by a 42-7 score while a 49-0 second round playoff defeat followed in postseason play.
That team of Panthers would move on to an 8-4 record before losing in the semi-final round of the playoffs to eventual state champion Greenville St. Joseph High School.
Historically, although IA has suffered those two consecutive losses to Canton Academy, the Colonels still have a 14-4 series advantage over the Panthers.
In IA’s victory over West Memphis Christian School last Friday, in addition to Killebrew’s big night rushing the ball, freshman quarterback Patrick Davis tallied two touchdown runs to add to the Colonels’ scoring.
Davis would end the night with 70 yards rushing while Fitz Manning added another 49 yards and a pair of two-point conversion runs with his work from the fullback position.
