One victory in three attempts was earned this past week by the young Indianola Academy baseball team.
With all three games being District 2-3A dates, the 4-9, 1-3 Colonels sandwiched a 14-2 home-field Monday night victory over Central Holmes Christian School between two losses.
Most recently Tuesday night, a trip to Winona Christian School ended a 6-1 loss to the Stars while last Friday saw the Colonels drop a 13-10 decision to visiting Carroll Academy.
Upcoming district action is scheduled to continue today when Oak Hill Academy of West Point comes to the IA field for a 6 p.m. game.
Additional play resumes next Tuesday when the Colonels travel to Carroll Academy for another 6 p.m. district game.
In Tuesday night’s loss to Winona Christian School, the Colonels played errorless ball on defense, but on offense timely hits were hard to come by.
The Stars, who would only collect five hits in the contest, opened their half of the first inning with a pair of two-run homers to take a 4-0 lead over the Colonels; a margin which proved to be all required to claim the game.
IA would plate their only run of the contest in the fifth frame by way of a bases-loaded walk.
Accumulating five hits of their own, leading the hitting for IA during this night’s play with a pair of singles apiece were Walker Anthony and Leland Selby.
On the mound, Walker Zepponi turned in a stellar five inning relief performance. The senior allowed but two hits while striking out seven batters and walking none.
Meanwhile, in Monday night’s run rule of Central Holmes Christian School, the Colonels used 12 hits to help plate their double digit runs.
A dozen of those runs crossed the plate in the first two innings of this four inning game as the Colonels quickly distanced themselves from the team from Lexington.
Leading the hitting for IA with three singles was Tyler Alford while Selby delivered a home run and a double during his time in the batter’s box.
Also drilling multiple hits were Wade Lang (2 doubles) and Zepponi (double, single) while Walker Perkins added a double to the IA offensive efforts.
On the mound, Anthony picked up the win as he allowed but three hits while fanning two and walking none. Showcasing excellent control, Anthony threw 38 strikes among his 50 total pitches.
In last Friday’s loss to Carroll Academy, the Colonels saw a 9-7 lead disappear in the top of the seventh inning when the Rebels struck for six runs.
Although plating one more run in their half of the final frame, the effort came up short.
The Colonels accumulated 11 hits in this contest and Alford’s five hit, three RBI night of play led the way.
While Lang would stroke a pair of singles, Conner Roncali hammered a double during the final inning of the game.
