Earning another District 2-3A football victory is the Indianola Academy Colonels’ goal of the day.
And tonight, on Legion Field, it will be the Trojans of Central Holmes Christian School in Lexington who will be standing between the Colonels and their important objective.
With today’s kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m., the game will pit two teams with identical records.
Owning 1-3, 1-0 won-loss marks, the two teams will walk onto Legion Field for the second of three consecutive home dates on the Colonels’ schedule.
“I feel we match up pretty good with Central Holmes,” said IA Head Coach Tommy Nester. “They have some good athletes, but we have to go out there and execute on both sides of the ball.”
In each team’s most recent non-district action played last Friday night, while the Colonels fell 40-7 to now 3-1 Winona Christian School, the Trojans also dropped a home-field decision.
Suffering a 40-0 loss to 2-2 Greenville Christian School last Friday, the Trojans are amid a two-game losing streak.
Although they claimed a 44-12 district victory in week two of the season over West Memphis Christian School, the Trojans also fell 36-8 to Kirk Academy of Grenada and 21-19 to Oak Hill Academy of West Point.
In last season’s meeting between IA and Central Holmes, the Colonels were on
the short end of a 41-6 score.
It was a victory which contributed to the Trojans’ 7-4 record earned in the 2023 season – a campaign which ended in the first round of the 3A playoffs.
Overall, IA owns a 3-2 advantage in this series over the team from Lexington.
In their most recent action last Friday, in their loss to Winona Christian School, the Colonels fell prey to the Stars’ strong ground game.
Striking quickly in the game, the Stars left the Colonels facing a 33-0 score by halftime.
However, the Colonels avoided a shutout with 7:02 left in the third quarter when quarterback Ty Killebrew covered the final two yards to the end zone.
Haygon Sheedy’s PAT kick was good to finalize the IA scoring for the night.
Offensively, Fitz Manning’s 44 yards earned on seven carries paced the Colonels’ ground game.
Through the air, Killebrew completed three of eight passes for 74 yards.
Sheedy pulled in two of those passes for 28 yards while Graham Howard’s catch netted another 38 yards of offense.
Defensively, Howard’s eight tackles led the IA resistance while Tucker Pannel and Matthew Gary recorded seven tackles apiece.
Killebrew also picked off one Winona pass to kill a drive.
