The Indianola Academy Colonels are now only one soccer victory away from playing for a state championship crown.
However, following their 5-3 opening round victory over St. Augustine School, standing between first year Head Coach Cole Jeavons’ Colonels and the opportunity to earn that Division III State Championship are the Laurel Christian School Lions.
That challenge will be determined at 3:30 p.m. today in Laurel where the 6-5 Colonels will play a Lions squad which entered postseason play as the No. 1 team from the south.
The historically strong Laurel Christian School team opened their playoff action with a Monday victory over Kirk Academy of Grenada.
Should the Colonels win today, they will play for the Division III state crown at 2 p.m. next Monday on the campus of Jackson Academy.
In their own initial playoff round, the Colonels advanced into today’s action on the strength of Monday’s 5-3 victory over St. Augustine School of Ridgeland.
In that victory played on the artificial turf of Sports Force Park in Vicksburg, an exciting battle ensued between the Colonels and Gryphons.
When all was said and done, the Colonels were nursing a narrow 4-3 lead over St. Augustine until a successful late-game free kick by Jahoe Seo sealed the game.
Described as “amazing” by Coach Jeavons, the 18 yard kick off Seo’s foot curled around the five-man wall the Gryphons offered as defense. The ball then buried itself into the bottom right corner of the net.
This goal by Seo was in addition to the pair of goals scored by Hamp Judson.
Also contributing one goal apiece to IA’s scoring was John Clay Hong and Walker Zepponi.
