The most important time of the season continues for the Indianola Academy basketball teams. With District 1-4A competition dominating their schedule, the Lady Colonels and Colonels began the gauntlet with Marshall Academy of Holly Springs visiting the IA gymnasium Thursday night. Results of that night’s action were unavailable at press time. That recent visit by the Patriots was also the first of two district contests due to be played within the next week. The Lady Colonels, who split their two recently games played, carried a 3-9, 0-5 into Thursday’s clash with Marshall Academy. Meanwhile, against the Patriots, the Colonels were looking to improve on their 1-11, 1-4 won-loss mark accrued thus far this season.
As for their upcoming basketball action, another district evening will occur next Tuesday when the IA squads visit Lee Academy in Clarksdale. Sandwiched in between these two named district clashes is a Monday night visit to IA by non-district foe Central Holmes Christian School of Lexington. All three nights of play will begin with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m. and the boys follow immediately thereafter. In this past week’s play, the Lady Colonels opened the new calendar year with a 50-38 Monday night victory over visiting non-district foe St. Joseph High School of Greenville.
Led by Maggie Jenkins’ double double, the Lady Colonels took an early lead and then fended off come-back efforts made by the Lady Irish. Jenkins recorded a stellar night for IA, a performance which included adding a dozen rebounds to the team-high 16 points the senior dropped through the basket. Controlling play in the paint was a team-effort by IA as Jordan Ferrell and Julia Davis also reached double digit status in the rebounding category. The pair grabbed 13 and 10 rebounds respectively in their efforts against St. Joseph High. In boys’ play, the Colonels fell by a 45-31 margin to the Fighting Irish. Sophomore Ty Killebrew led IA’s offensive efforts by posting 10 points on the scoreboard. In other action this past Tuesday, a trip to North Delta School in Batesville saw the Lady Colonels fall by a 54-14 margin. Meanwhile the Colonels dropped a 54-31 decision to the Green Wave.
