The Indianola mayor and Board of Aldermen on Monday recognized city workers, community partners and volunteers for their service during Winter Storm Fern at the board’s regular meeting at the City Hall Annex.
Mayor Kenneth Featherstone and the full board — Ward 1 Alderman Alex Deason, Ward 2 Alderman Keith Spealman, Ward 3 Alderman Calvin Moton, Ward 4 Alderman Johnny Phillips and Ward 5 Alderman Rodreigus Young — were present for the 7 p.m. meeting, along with City Clerk Stephanie Washington and Board Attorney Mack Arthur Turner.
During a special presentation, Featherstone praised the city’s Public Works Department for its emergency preparedness and response in restoring services and addressing hazardous conditions during the storm. Plaques presented to the department cited employees’ bravery, professionalism and willingness to answer “the call of duty under the harshest of freezing and dangerous conditions” for the good of the community.
The mayor also honored Knight’s Trimming & Pruning LLC with the City of Indianola Community Impact Award, recognizing the company as a local business that provided critical support when the storm was at its worst. Another plaque commended the Indianola Community Emergency Response Team with a Volunteer Service Award for extraordinary service and dedication, noting members’ commitment of their time to help residents in need during and after the storm.
Featherstone said the awards reflected the city’s gratitude for residents, workers and local partners who stepped up in a time of crisis and demonstrated what he described as the best of Indianola’s community spirit.
