Stephanie Washington has come home.
After working as the City of Indianola’s financial consultant for several months, the former Sunflower County comptroller is now officially the city clerk.
With a wealth of experience in public administration and a fresh vision for community engagement, Washington is eager to begin this new chapter in city service.
She was sworn into the position in April. She most recently served full time as the county administrator in Adams County.
A Background in Public Service
Washington comes to the position with over 17½ years of experience in local government.
Known for her dedication to public service, she has a proven track record of supporting various administrations over the years.
“I am loving my new role as the city’s historian, auditor, bookkeeper and record keeper,” Washington said during a recent interview. “I am ready to serve the residents of Indianola. I believe strongly in the value of public service motivation as a driving force for positive change in our communities. I want to collaborate with department heads to upskill our workforce and enhance our efforts in recruiting and retaining employees.”
In February 2025, Stephanie received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for outstanding public service to the community from Congressman Bennie Thompson.
In May 2018, she earned a certificate from the State Executive Development Institute, hosted by the John C. Stennis Institute of Government and Community Development at Mississippi State University.
She is an active member of the Association of Government Accountants, where she serves as a board member of the Journal of Government Financial Management’s editorial board.
Washington is ABD (all but dissertation) in her Ph.D. program in Human Capital Development at the University of Southern Mississippi. She is a graduate of Delta State University (M.P.A., 2014; M.B.A., 2007; B.B.A., 2006), Mississippi Valley State University (B.S., 2013), Mississippi Delta Community College (A.A., 2004), and Gentry High School (2002). Additionally, she is an adjunct instructor and course developer at Missouri Baptist University, teaching managerial accounting, financial management, organizational behavior and leadership, and human resource talent training and development.
Looking Ahead
As Washington steps into this pivotal role, the city is also preparing for an upcoming election in October.
With a focus on collaboration and responsiveness, Washington aims to position the city clerk’s office as a cornerstone of effective local governance.
She shared, “I am looking forward to serving the citizens of Indianola and working with the mayor and aldermen to see significant progress in the City of Indianola.”
Historically, the city has experienced high turnover in the key position of city clerk, along with periods of dormancy when the position was vacant.
Washington expressed her commitment to providing longevity and stability to this vital role.
As a resident of Indianola with transferable skills from her county-level experience, she seems well-positioned to address the city’s needs and challenges.
Residents are encouraged to welcome Washington and share their thoughts and ideas about the future of Indianola.
With a new era of leadership underway, the community looks forward to seeing how Washington will help shape the city’s future.
