The Indianola WIN Job Center, located at 226 N. Martin Luther King Drive, is set to close its doors permanently.
The last day of service will be next week Friday, June 13, with the center ceasing operations entirely by June 30.
This closure comes after years of providing employment and resource services to residents of Sunflower County.
District 31 State Representative Otis Anthony confirmed the closure, citing low foot traffic and recent state funding cutbacks as the primary reasons for the decision.
"I was told by MDES officials that the Indianola WIN Job Center just doesn't have enough foot traffic," Anthony explained. "They're looking at the clients they serve, and because of that, they can't justify the expense of keeping it open. Some of these smaller communities, like Indianola and Carthage, are closing due to budget constraints and being underserved. They've made similar decisions with health departments and other services.
It’s very disappointing."
Historically, the Indianola WIN Job Center offered a variety of services for individuals, including job placement assistance, WIOA services, TAA, Job Corps, and on-the-job training programs.
It also provided resources for people with disabilities through the Department of Rehabilitation Services, veteran priority services, and career counseling in partnership with Mississippi Delta Community College.
For employers, the center offered recruiting, screening, and access to tax credit programs, as well as space for interviews.
Residents seeking employment services will now need to travel to neighboring cities such as Cleveland, Greenville, or Greenwood. The employment centers in those locations will continue to serve the community’s needs.
Services previously available at the Indianola WIN Job Center included:
Job placement, training, and resource access
Disability-specific services
Veteran priority services
Career counseling and skills training
Employer recruiting and interview space
The closure of the center marks a significant change for the Sunflower County community, which has relied on its resources for many years. As funding continues to tighten across state agencies, local officials and residents are expressing disappointment over the loss of this vital community resource.
