Jack Kennedy “Ken” Wood Jr. passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at his beloved deer camp, Timber Ridge — a place that brought him great joy and peace.
Ken was born Oct. 10, 1948, in Indianola, to Beatrice Bennett Wood and Jack Kennedy Wood Sr. He spent his early childhood years in Florida before returning with his family to Indianola, where they became members of First Methodist Church.
Ken graduated from Indianola High School in 1966. He continued his education at Mississippi Delta Junior College (now MDCC) and graduated from Mississippi State University where he was an honored member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Following college, Ken proudly served his country as a member of the Mississippi National Guard.
On Dec. 18, 1971, Ken married his high school sweetheart, Carol Rogers. Together they shared 54 years of marriage.
Partnering with his family, Ken enjoyed a distinguished 52-year career in the furniture industry as a furniture manufacturers’ representative, traveling throughout Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. Over the course of his career, he represented many companies, most recently Universal Furniture and Affordable Furniture. Throughout his career, Ken received numerous accolades and awards, a testament to his work ethic and genuine love for people. A natural people person, his customers became lifelong friends.
Ken was a devoted servant of Indianola First Methodist Church, serving on the leadership team and was a longtime member of his cherished Sunday school class, Pairs and Spares. He was also a member of the North Mississippi Emmaus community.
Ken never met a stranger and was known for his infectious smile and warm greeting. He had many passions in life. His greatest pride and joy were his two grandsons. He was a devoted Mississippi State University fan and proud member of the Bulldog Club. He enjoyed working in his yard and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Ken went to heaven doing what he loved — spending time at his hunting camp.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Wood; his son, John Rogers Wood (Jessica); two grandsons, Neal Austin Wood and Wilkes Bennett Wood; his sister, Sandra Boyer (Joe); sister-in-law, Louise Hartlein (John); brother-in-law, Denton Rogers (Betty Barrett); and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Ken’s funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 12, at Indianola First Methodist Church with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. in Newman Hall. Burial followed. Arrangements were under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Indianola.
