The Sunflower County Board of Supervisors appointed Captain Otha James III of the Indianola Fire Department as the county's new fire inspector.
Sheriff James Haywood recommended James for the position, highlighting his extensive qualifications and experience in fire safety. District 1 Supervisor Glenn Donald made the motion for the appointment, which was seconded by District 3 Supervisor Anthony Clark. The motion passed unanimously.
James’ role with the city department will not change.
James, who has a 16-year career in firefighting and has volunteered for three years with the Indianola Volunteer Fire Department, also serves as a fire instructor and CPR instructor.
In an interview with The Enterprise-Tocsin, he outlined his responsibilities as fire inspector.
“A fire investigator is responsible for examining fire scenes to determine the origin and cause of a fire,” he said. His duties include collecting and analyzing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and documenting the scene.
James emphasized that his primary goal is to identify potential arson cases and assist in legal proceedings by providing detailed reports and expert testimony when necessary. He will work closely with law enforcement agencies and insurance companies to ensure thorough investigations.
The board expressed confidence in Captain James’ ability to enhance fire safety and prevention efforts in the county.
