The Sunflower County Chancery Court in Indianola unveiled a vibrant new mural featuring the phrase “Justice For All,” marking an important step in making the courthouse more welcoming for families and children.
The event was celebrated by Judge Debra Giles, District 2 Supervisor Riley Rice and court staff and community leaders Sharon Patrick, Darnielle Duncan, Pam Morris-Atkins and Kierre Rimmer.
The mural’s colorful handprints symbolize unity and collaboration, reflecting the court’s commitment to serving families and children. “All I do is deal with children and families,” Judge Giles said. “Our goal is to create a more welcoming environment and provide resources to those who need them most.”
Supervisor Rice emphasized the importance of community engagement, saying, “These people probably know more about what’s going on in our community than anybody else, and it directly affects them.”
Alongside the mural, the court is establishing a welcoming nook with rocking chairs and a bookshelf stocked with donated books—over 40 so far—to help families as they wait for hearings. “It’s our way of making the experience less daunting and more nurturing, especially for children,” Giles said.
Judge Giles also announced plans for a Parenting Support Group to further support local families. “Parenting isn’t a competition—sharing knowledge benefits all our children,” she said.
The Sunflower County Chancery Court says that it will continue its commitment to accessible justice, with staff dedicated to supporting families through every initiative, building trust and hope in the community—one family at a time
