Kinlock Road has reopened to traffic after more than a month of repair work, Sunflower County supervisors were told at their Dec. 1 meeting.
The Sunflower County Board of Supervisors met at 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at the Sunflower County Courthouse in Indianola. All five supervisors — Glenn Donald of District 1, Riley Rice of District 2, Roger Anthony of District 3, Anthony Clark of District 4 and Board President Gloria Dickerson of District 5 — were present, along with County Administrator Mary Hart, Chancery Clerk Gloria McIntosh and Board Attorney Johnny McWilliams.
Under Agenda Item 10, south end road manager Tim Howell gave his monthly road report and updated the board on completion of the Kinlock Road project. Howell said the road was closed Oct. 21 for repairs and was reopened Nov. 24 after crews replaced a failed culvert, hauled and compacted additional dirt and stabilized the outlet with geotextile matting, broken concrete and riprap. He told supervisors that using stockpiled broken concrete instead of purchasing all new riprap likely saved the county tens of thousands of dollars.
The board approved a change order reflecting the extra work and praised Howell and both county road crews for their efforts to finish the job before winter weather sets in. Supervisors also agreed to allow a Caterpillar representative to conduct a one-day safety and maintenance training session for the entire road department, with the company providing lunch for employees.
