Although the Indianola Academy Colonels have seen their basketball season come to an end, the Lady Colonels were still fighting to stay alive Wednesday night.
Competing in the North 2A State Tournament hosted by Canton Academy, the Lady Colonels took their 5-11 record into their game against Newton Academy of Decatur.
On the strength of their No. 2 district seeding, the Lady Colonels had drawn a bye in Monday’s opening round of the tournament.
Meanwhile, that same night Newton Academy earned a 52-16 decision over Deer Creek School of Arcola to advance to their matchup with the Lady Colonels.
While results of Wednesday’s IA-Newton Academy clash were unavailable at press time, should the Lady Colonels have won, they would move on to Friday’s 5:15 p.m. semifinal game.
That opponent would be the winner of Wednesday’s Canton Academy versus Central Holmes Christian School of Lexington game.
While the championship game of this tournament is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Saturday, the battle for third place will occur at 1 p.m. that same day.
However, as a bonus, a Wednesday night victory over Newton Academy would also ensure the Lady Colonels a berth in either the Division 1 or the Division 2 State Tournament.
The upcoming state tournament is scheduled to begin February 12, and will be hosted by Delta Academy in Marks.
As for the Colonels, they saw their season come to an end in the North State 2A Tournament at Canton Academy.
Succumbing to Newton Academy Monday night by a 55-41 score, the 4-14 Colonels’ scoring efforts in this game was led by Tristen Bradshaw’s 16 points scored.
