It is on to the 5A State Playoffs for the Gentry High Lady Rams basketball team.
Traveling today to New Hope High School in Columbus, the 13-14 Lady Rams are hoping to continue the clutch play which has gotten them to this point of the postseason.
“I am so proud of the girls,” said Gentry High Head Coach Kenyon Butler. “They have really come together as a team and are playing well at the right time.”
The Lady Rams will enter today’s game as the number three seed from Region 2-5A.
That slot in the playoffs was earned following the Lady Rams’ 33-31 victory over Cleveland Central High in last Friday’s Region 2 Tournament consolation game.
Meanwhile, the Lady Trojans of New Hope School bring a Region 1 number two seed and a strong 16-6 record into today’s 7 p.m. match-up with Lady Rams.
Should the Lady Rams win tonight’s contest in Lowndes County, they will move on to play in round two of the playoffs.
That game will occur next Thursday, and their opponent will be the winner of tonight’s Canton High versus Lafayette County (Oxford) High contest.
Tentative tipoff time is listed as 5:30 p.m.
An additional potential positive note is that a Gentry High victory tonight coupled with a Lafayette County upset of Canton High would create a home game for the Lady Rams next Thursday.
In this past week’s tournament hosted by Canton High School, the Lady Rams earned their two-point victory over Cleveland Central High the hard way.
Although at one point up by 15 points into the third period of play, the Gentry squad was required to withstand a fourth quarter rally by the Lady Wolves to secure the victory.
Za’Kensly Yarbor continued her habit of reaching double digit scoring status by leading her team with 15 points dropped through the basket.
Meanwhile, Zion Brown added to her double double performances executed this season by matching her 10 points scored with 10 rebounds.
