With plenty of fresh faces on the softball field and in the coaching ranks, the Lady Trojans of Mississippi Delta Community College are working together to find that winning chemistry. The “lab experiment” hasn’t yielded much on the winning side of the ledger but Head Coach Olivia Burns is learning while on the job and working her team to find that winning edge.
“We’re improving every game and the girls are finally realizing they have to work together to win and have to learn how to win,” Coach Burns said. “We are trying to do stuff together and get more involved with each other. When they are on the field, they will work better together. They are doing a lot better with that.”
“Lizzie Carpenter has been hitting the ball really well. Both of my pitchers, Maddy and Taryn (Clark) are starting to improve and hitting their spots more. McKenna Brown has started in relief but she can play anywhere. She’s a young one but she’s showing she can do it.”
Her first year as a head coach, Burns is figuring out how to lead as a young coach.
“How to associate with the girls with me being this young. They are close to my age and I don’t want to be too light on them and not too hard on them,” she said.
The team dropped a double-header to Southwest Tennessee Community College, 7-1 and 6-2. The team travels to Booneville on Saturday to take on Kirkwood Community College and Northeast Community College in the Coach David Carnell Challenge. First game begins at 1:00 p.m. They travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Friday March 10 for a 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. double-header.
