Dear Editor,
At our most recent meeting, the seniors of Delta Missions wished a Happy Birthday to Mr. George Armstrong! We had our devotion, our song and prayer. We put God first and thanked Him for being here, and then it was Mr. George’s time. We sang “Happy Birthday” to Mr. George, and when we got to the second part of the song, we all turned to Mr. George and sang, “How old are you?” and Mr. George said, “10 years old.” Mr. George, you are such a big, strong young man for 10 years old to have been married, had children, and a war veteran (smile). Mr. George had two occasions to celebrate – his birthday and Veterans Day. Mr. George’s daughter, Cynthia, surprised him with a catered lunch for his birthday with Thanksgiving decorations. Ms. Hale had those tables covered with the right attire. Those pumpkins on those tablecloths were so big it seemed as though you could reach over and pick them and take them home to make a pumpkin pie! Now guess who catered the food? One of Delta Missions’ former students, Cedric Minton. He’s a graduate of Gentry High School and has been catering since 2011, for about 14 years. During the day, he drives 18-wheelers. He’s married and has two children and is very humble and respectful.
This takes me back to a few years ago when Pastor Wilson took the seniors out to lunch in Greenville. We were sitting in the restaurant, and Pastor Wilson came over with a young man and introduced him to us. The young man was a former student at Delta Missions, who was a principal in Greenville at that time. I though it was one of Pastor’s jokes because he was so young. I leaned over and asked the young man, “Sir, are you a principal?” He said, “Yes, ma’am.”
I told the young man who catered the food Wednesday that I’m so proud of him as if he was my own son. I’m also proud of Pastor Wilson, but he doesn’t realize how proud of him I am. When God made him, He broke the mold. He is truly an original. We need Delta Missions in every Delta town, but who would run the center? Nobody but Rev. Wilson has the patience to run a center with various programs and be involved in many other community activities.
God has truly blessed Delta Missions and Pastor Wilson. With God all things are possible.
