As our summer reading program winds down, we want to send a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for a season full of imagination, learning, and community fun. But don’t close your books just yet – August is packed with exciting programs to keep the momentum going!
Whether you are looking for creative workshops, back-to-school resources, family-friendly events, or a quiet corner to dive into your next great read, the library is here for you. Stay tuned as we highlight some of the engaging events and services coming your way this August – you won’t want to miss them!
If you cannot make these programs due to a tight schedule, take advantage of Library Pop-In Programs at all library branches available to you whenever you visit the library.
Back to School Reading Challenge – August 1st to 31st. Join us this August as you dive into your favorite books by completing a reading challenge with your selected book. Return the completed reading challenge card when you return your borrowed book. The card will be placed in a Reading Challenge Collection Box and at the end of the month, a drawing will occur. The lucky winner will receive a small prize as a reward for participating. This month’s prize is a Library Bag filled with reading essentials: book light, magnetic bookmark, and a page magnifier – something nice to have while you enjoy your next book. Please ask at the library’s Circulation Desk for more details. All library branches will be offering the reading challenge. This program benefits people of all ages.
Storytime at the Library – Storytime is a wonderful way to introduce early literacy skills and the joy of reading. Join us for Storytime at the Library every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Indianola Library featuring “Stanley at School” by Linda Bailey on August 5, “I Yam A Donkey” by Cece Bell on August 12, “The King of Kindergarten” by Derrick Barnes on August 19 and “The Whale in My Swimming Pool” by Joyce Wan on August 26. Just drop in and enjoy! This program benefits ages 0-5.
Virtual Storytime – It is the perfect way to share stories together, no matter where you are. Join us for Virtual Storytime every Thursday. This week’s story is “Don’t Forget the Bacon” by Pat Hutchins. To join, simply visit the Sunflower County Library YouTube channel. This program benefits ages 0-5.
ABC Adventure Storytime and Craft – Get ready for an alphabet adventure! Join us at the library for ABC Adventure Storytime and Craft! We will explore the alphabets through a fun story and hands on crafts that help little learners build early literacy skills – all while having a blast! Perfect for preschoolers and their grown-up. Come listen and create your way through the ABCs on August 4 at 4 p.m. at the Moorhead Library and on August 5 at 4 p.m. at the Inverness Library! Check your calendar and join the adventure!
My First Day Storytime – Storytime is a gentle, joyful way to help young children prepare emotionally and socially for starting preschool or daycare. “Llama Llama Misses Mama” by Anna Dewdney will help little ones feel excited and supported as they prepare for school. Join us at 3:30 p.m. on August 4 at the Drew Library and on August 5 at the Ruleville Library. Church History – Join us as speaker Emily Jones, archivist for the Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission and Mississippi College, presents an enlightening one-hour session designed to help members of rural and local faith-based communities preserve and celebrate the history of their churches on August 7 at noon at the Indianola Library. Preserve today what will inspire tomorrow – be part of the initiative to record and protect your church’s vibrant story. A light lunch will be provided for participants.
Fun With Oobleck – Get ready to get messy with science! Join us for Fun with Oobleck: A Wacky STEM Activity! Is it a solid? Is it a liquid? It is Oobleck! Inspired by Dr. Seuss, this hands-on experiment lets kids explore the weird world of fluids while learning about science in the most fun (and squishy) way possible! Perfect for curious minds and little hands – don't miss it! Visit the Indianola Library on August 7 at 4 p.m. for a slimy good time where science and fun collide!
Your Vision for Back-to-School Vision Board Workshop – Back to school, back to your vision! Join us at the library for "Your Vision for Back to School" Vision Board Workshop! Set your goals, dream big, and get creative as you design a board that reflects your hopes for the new school year – whether it is better grades, new friendships, or more confidence! Let's turn your back-to-school dreams into a vision you can see! Visit the Moorhead Library on August 11 at 4 p.m. and at the Inverness Library on August 12 at 4 p.m. to get started. Your future begins now!
Wii Tournament of Champions – Are you ready to swing, bowl, and smash your way to victory? Join us at the library for the Wii Sports Tournament of Champions! Compete in classic games like bowling, tennis, and boxing to see who will take home the title of Library Champion! Show up and game on. Let the tournament begin! Visit the Indianola Library on August 14 at 4 p.m. for fun, friendly competition, and serious Wii skills!
History Tidbit – Discover fascinating moments from the past! Check out the Sunflower County Library System Facebook page for this month’s History Tidbit featuring the War of 1812. America 250 – To celebrate our nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary, the library will feature interesting facts about the signers of the Declaration of Independence on our Sunflower County Library Facebook page. The featured story for August 1 is about James Wilson, for August 8 is William Williams, for August 15 is William Whipple, for August 22 is George Walton and for August 29 is Matthew Thornton.
The Social Hour – Join us for fun and games such as Bingo on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Indianola Library. What a wonderful way to meet new friends and keep your mind sharp! This program benefits our senior adults in the community.
Chair Aerobics – Get fit while you sit every 4th Thursday of each month from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Indianola Library. This program benefits adults.
Self-Paced Digital Literacy – Contact your local library to set up a session. This program benefits adults.
