The Sunflower County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a probable homicide that likely occurred late Thursday night.
Sheriff James Haywood told The Enterprise-Tocsin on Friday that the body of 21-year-old Demarius Antoni Lavonne Richard was discovered about 13 feet off the shoulder of Kinlock Road, in the county, at around 10:14 p.m. on Thursday night.
Haywood said it is believed the body had not been there long.
Richard’s body was discovered about a quarter of a mile south of Indianola, and officers with the Indianola Police Department were first on the scene at around 10:19 p.m., Haywood said.
Haywood said Richard appears to have been shot, but he said the results from the autopsy could take several days to confirm that.
Richard apparently lived in Indianola, and while there are few leads from the Kinlock scene, Haywood said he is working with IPD to try to develop a suspect or suspects who may have been involved in a recent shooting incident that may have involved Richard’s home.
As of right now, the death is being investigated as a homicide, Haywood said.
