It can be very challenging to start a fitness routine, let alone take up running.
If you’ve been inactive for a long time, imagining yourself running every day likely seems nearly as inconceivable as winning the lottery or taking a trip around the world.
However, Indianola native Darrell Caldwell turns that imagination into reality every morning.
“To stay healthy and live a prosperous life is my goal,” Darrell told The Enterprise-Tocsin, a place where he has worked in the mailroom for years. “It gives me joy to know that I can make long runs, and get the job done. It’s what motivates me. Running at my age is challenging, but I’m determined.
While meeting with Darrell on his run, which is a route that starts south of Indianola and leads to the north, he left me with a few things that can motivate you and me to start our running journey.
Running may be good for your physical and mental health at any age.
Running is a fantastic cardiovascular activity, and staying in shape and exercising your body is vital as you get older.
Running has a big influence on your muscles and joints, which is why running slowly is beneficial, particularly if you modify it to your body's capability. Many runners dread stretching before a run, but because it is a crucial component of your run, you should never disregard it, especially if you are older.
A good stretch may significantly lower your chances of injury and provide you time to mentally prepare for the run. When you first start, don't be too ambitious with your goals.
It is okay if you can only run for 10 minutes.
You will be able to run for extended periods after some repetitions. Running longer than your body's capabilities increases your risk of injury, but it also lowers your motivation to exercise. If you are unable to begin running right away, you can walk or add walking intervals into your runs.
Darrell motivated me to begin my morning run journey, which I started on Sunday.
The more you run, the more your concept of "hard" changes.
I’ve found that it is determined by the speed, length and personal objectives.
That first mile seemed slow, frustrating and oddly irritating.
Continuing, I encourage you to get up as I did and start your journey.
It’s 2024, it’s a new year of initiative, experience, and so much more. So, finish this month with the intent of bettering your health physically.
“If you’re going to start running, believe in yourself, I believe in you.
To know that you can do anything is one thing, so start today. Put your faith and trust in God,” Darrell stated.
