Bucking the odds, the Indianola Academy Colonels baseball team may be peaking at the right time of the season.
For a 5-2 Tuesday night victory over Washington School in Greenville left the IA baseball team just one win away from reaching round three of the North State 4A playoffs.
The Colonels claimed the game over Washington School by breaking open a scoreless contest in the top of the seventh inning.
Aided by five hits and two Washington School errors, the Colonels plated all five of their runs scored.
IA pitcher Liam Ledbetter then closed out his complete game performance by limiting the Generals to one earned run in the game’s final frame.
Meanwhile, the series will be decided on Friday evening at Washington School, as the Greenville team took game two Thursday night 14-0.
The Colonels carry a 12-15 record into tonight's play.
Game time is to be announced.
Should IA continue their winning ways, their next opponent in next week’s playoff action will be the winner of this week’s Canton Academy versus North Delta School of Batesville series.
Game days, locations, and times are to be announced.
In their clutch victory Tuesday night over Washington School, it would be a Slaton Helms single which ignited the IA final inning uprising.
Three batters later, the Colonels struck for three consecutive hits. This cluster of hits saw a Patrick Davis double sandwiched between RBI singles from Ty Killebrew and Walker Perkins.
Gage Berry then became the ninth IA batter to come to the plate in the inning and drove in another two runs with his single.
Helms would lead IA’s eight-hit attack with a pair of singles.
Picking up the win on the mound, Ledbetter limited the Generals to four hits while striking out seven and walking four.
Meanwhile, the Colonels earned their second-round playoff berth last Saturday by clinching their best-of-three series with Winona Christian School.
In the Colonels’ victory over Winona Christian School some creative scheduling was required.
With the rain washing away last Thursday’s scheduled home-field meeting against the Stars, the potential doubleheader was played last Saturday and moved to Pillow Academy in Greenwood.
However, it only required the Colonels one game to settle the matter as they handed the Winona squad a 9-4 loss.
Scoring all the runs needed to win the game within the first two innings, the Colonels continued to add to their 5-1 lead as the game progressed.
When all was said and done, a nine-hit attack was had by the IA batters with Killebrew’s pair of singles and RBIs leading the way.
On the mound, Weston Farmer earned the win as his 5.2 innings of work scattered nine hits while striking out three and walking two batters.
