A trip down Highway 49 is on tap today for a Thomas Edwards High football team in search of its first Region 3-3A victory.
Making the drive from Ruleville to Belzoni, the 2-4, 0-1 Tigers will take on a Humphreys County High squad which brings a 5-1, 1-0 record into tonight’s contest.
Kickoff for this Tigers versus Cowboys clash is set to begin at 7 p.m.
Last week’s initial regional action in Greenwood did not go well for the Edwards High Tigers as they saw a two-game win streak come to an end.
The result of that night’s regional outing saw the Tigers fall 46-22 to the now 4-2, 1-0 Amanda Elzy High Panthers.
“We had too many turnovers,” said Edwards Head Coach Demaris Mitchell. “We gave them too many short fields to try to score and they took advantage of it.”
Meanwhile, that same night the Humphreys County Cowboys won their third consecutive game by defeating Yazoo County by a 22-14 margin.
Thus far this season, the only loss suffered by the Cowboys came at the hands of Gentry High School in week three of the 2023 schedule.
Historically last year, during an 8-4 season, the Cowboys extended their win streak over the Tigers to two games with a 26-6 victory.
The series between the two schools from Belzoni and Ruleville has been closely contested. Overall, in this series Edwards High has a narrow 12-11 advantage.
In last week’s loss to Amanda Elzy High, the Tigers found themselves down by a 20-6 margin at the end of the first quarter.
Striking for their first touchdown of the game, it would be a 20-yard scoring pass from quarterback Markist Webb to Timothy Jones which opened the Tigers’ scoring.
However, by halftime the Panthers had built their lead to a commanding 40-6 margin.
The Tigers would score one touchdown in each of the final quarters of play to complete their point total in this contest.
The other touchdowns were earned by Randy Maxon’s 55-yard run to the end zone while Webb threw his second scoring pass of the night to Narkeith Madden.
This final scoring pass covered 47 yards.
Offensively, the Tigers’ ground game was led by Maxon’s 15 carries for 172 yards.
Through the air, Webb completed seven of 13 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Jones and David Watson paced their team with seven tackles apiece.
Turning in a five-tackle night of play was Lamarrious Cotton while Sanchez Meeks and Damien Scott recorded four and three tackles respectively.
