There are times when history comes back to haunt you.
It was 100 years ago when a Ruleville-based football team played its first game, a 6-0 loss to Leland High School.
Ironically, that same 6-0 score was recorded last Friday night during Ruleville’s century-old football anniversary.
Unfortunately, when the final buzzer sounded the Edwards High Tigers of Ruleville had fallen again – on this occasion to visiting Coahoma County High of Clarksdale.
Interestingly, the game’s only touchdown was not earned offensively.
For the contest’s deciding points were scored in the first period when the Red Panthers returned a pass interception 80 yards for the score.
The balance of the game then became a defensive slugfest with neither team able to find the end zone.
With that game behind them, the Tigers must now move their focus to tonight’s annual Unity Bowl date with the Gentry High School Rams.
The kickoff for this game in Indianola is scheduled for 7 p.m. and this all-Sunflower County contest will involve two teams with identical 0-1 records.
Gentry High opened their season last Saturday night with a 28-12 loss to Greenwood High School.
In last season’s match-up in this long-running series with Gentry High, the Edwards High Tigers suffered a 40-0 loss.
Historically, the Rams own a 39-15-1 series advantage over the Tigers.
In last week’s loss to Coahoma County, the Tigers experienced offensive difficulties against the Red Panthers’ defense.
When all was said and done, only 161 total yards was earned offensively by the Edwards High efforts.
Kyle Mitchell picked up 105 of those yards with his 21 rushes.
Another 44 yards were earned through the air when Kenan Williams completed two of his seven passes.
Both completions were caught by Samuel Jefferson, with the longest covering 26 yards.
Defensively, the Tigers recorded a shutout in their first outing of the new season.
Leading this resistance with five tackles, including two for losses, was Narkeith Madden. Meanwhile, Timothy Jones added two tackles and two assists.
Also recording two tackles was Eli Wiley.
