It was a successful opening night of basketball for the Gentry High Lady Rams and Rams Tuesday night.
Hosting Humphreys County High of Belzoni, the Lady Rams prevailed by a 47-23 score and the Rams pummeled the Cowboys by a dominating 72-33 score.
Meanwhile, the Gentry squads also played Thursday night in the second of three consecutive home-court non-regional bouts on their schedule — on this occasion against Clarksdale High School.
The results of those games were unavailable at press time.
Upcoming basketball action for the Lady Rams and Rams will all be non-regional clashes and will continue this Saturday. On that day, the Gentry squads have a home-court date against cross-county rival Thomas Edwards High of Ruleville.
Basketball play then resumes next Tuesday with a visit to Amanda Elzy High in Greenwood.
Additional competition within the next week also includes South Panola High School. The Gentry squads will hit the road next Thursday to Batesville for that non-regional play.
All games this next week will see the Lady Rams playing at 6 p.m. each day with the boys’ game to begin immediately thereafter.
In this past Tuesday night’s season-opener with Humphreys County, the Lady Rams erased a narrow 15-12 halftime lead by outscoring the Cowgirls 32-11 in the second half to earn their 24-point victory.
Leading the scoring for Gentry High with 14 points was Zion Brown.
In Rams action against Humphreys County, the Rams benefited from the double-digit scoring of four players.
Leading the scoring by dropping 26 points through the basket in the Rams’ 39-point blowout win of the Cowboys was ZaCarius Johnson.
Meanwhile, Makheal Blackmon’s double-double night of play included matching his 10 points scored with 10 rebounds.
Rounding out Gentry’s scoring leaders were DeMarques Gibson and DeMarion Gibson, who posted 15 and 12 points respectively on the scoreboard.
