A dry baseball field on which to play has now become a high-in-demand commodity.
However, if the opportunity presents itself within this next week, the Indianola Academy Colonels baseball team owns a heavy slate of games to play.
Currently 1-1 going into yesterday’s (Thursday) scheduled visit to Riverside High School in Avon, the Colonels were hoping to experience their first home game of the season today.
This contest is slated to be played today against Winona Christian School. Originally a scheduled home game, it was not determined at press time where the game would be played, if played at all. Check out the IA Facebook page for updates.
The result of the Riverside High game was unavailable at press time.
Meanwhile, next Monday will find the Colonels at Washington School in Greenville for a 2 p.m. game.
Additional action includes a trip next Tuesday to Pillow Academy in Greenwood. The first pitch of the varsity game is scheduled to be thrown at 6 p.m.
The next scheduled home game of the season is expected to be played next Thursday when Tunica Academy becomes the competition.
Meanwhile, in last Wednesday’s opening day, a visit to Washington School in Greenville saw the Colonels split the doubleheader with the Generals.
After dropping a hard-fought 5-4 decision to the Generals, the Colonels rebounded in the nightcap with a 15-13 victory.
In the season’s opening game, the Colonels saw a 4-4 deadlock after three innings disappear in the fifth inning.
Although the Generals took a 5-4 lead into the seventh, and final, inning, the Colonels knotted the game at five runs apiece.
However, Washington School plated the game-winning run in their half of the seventh to claim the game.
With both teams registering seven hits apiece, it was senior Walker Perkins pacing IA with his pair of singles and a double.
Weston Farmer also drilled a double to help lead the IA offense.
On the mound, Liam Ledbetter and Farmer toiled three innings apiece with each of them allowing two earned runs apiece.
Ledbetter yielded three hits while walking three and striking out four batters while Farmer’s work produced one walk and one strikeout.
Closing out their day’s play with their high-scoring 15-13 victory, the Colonels sprayed 11 hits around the diamond against the Generals’ pitching staff.
Leading the way at the plate was Graham Howard. The sophomore would drill three singles and drive three runs across the plate.
Also having a strong game was eighth grader Patrick Davis as the catcher contributed a double and single to the IA efforts.
The balance of the IA attack was led by Perkins and ninth grader Ty Killebrew. The pair completed the game with a pair of singles apiece.
On the mound, five pitchers ate up innings for IA in this slugfest. Killebrew eventually claimed the win.
His 2.2 innings of work yielded four hits while he struck out four Washington School batters.
