The first softball victory of the season came at a most opportune time for the Indianola Academy Lady Colonels.
For a 12-11 win Monday evening was earned in the Lady Colonels’ District 1-4A opener.
With that decision over visiting Lee Academy from Clarksdale behind them, the IA squad now prepares for another pair of District 1- 4A clashes next week.
As for those upcoming important district games, Monday will bring defending state champion Marshall Academy of Holly Springs to Chism Park.
The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
District play continues at a fast pace next Tuesday when the IA squad travels to Grenada to take on Kirk Academy.
Game time for this contest is to be announced.
Meanwhile in their most recent action Thursday night, the Lady Colonels carried a 1-6, 1-1 record into their non-district, home-field matchup against Winona Christian School. The results of that game were unavailable at press time.
In the Lady Colonels’ recent 12-11 district win over Lee Academy, a 14-hit barrage greatly aided in accumulating the dozen runs scored on the visiting Fillies.
Hayden Sherland and Nyla Thomas led this hitting effort by stroking three singles apiece.
Kelly Arrington also drilled a pair of doubles in the contest while Julia Davis added a double and a single to the cause.
In the pitcher’s circle, Meri Addyson Donahue picked up her first win of the season. The senior lefthander scattered 10 hits while striking out three Lee Academy hitters.
Meanwhile, other action this past Tuesday saw the Lady Colonels drop a 15-6 road decision to district foe North Delta School in Batesville.
In this outing, Arrington’s double and single led the IA eight-hit attack.
An additional pair of singles was provided by Thomas while Davis drilled a three-RBI triple.
The Lady Colonels also suffered a non-district, double-header loss last Saturday to Manchester Academy.
Despite falling (10-5, 23-6) to the Lady Mavericks, the IA girls accumulated 20 hits in the twin bill.
Sherland led this hitting attack with two doubles and two singles during the day’s play.
Also stroking a double and a single was Maggie Jenkins while Arrington and Carlyle Reed added a pair of singles apiece.
