With a week layoff to get football season started, the Lady Rebel softball team hosted Lee Academy (Arkansas) but fell 11-2 in the Tuesday matchup. In 17 at bats, the Lady Rebels could only muster two runs off of five hits with two RBIs and one walk. But as a team there were only two strikeouts. Senior Meridyth Scallion pitched the five inning game with 134 pitches giving up 15 hits, 11 runs (all earned) but had seven strikeouts and walked nine. Eighth grader Rivers Couey and junior Paisley Graham had NSA’s two RBIs.
The game was tied with one each after the first inning but Lee Academy pulled away putting up seven runs in the top of the second, added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Lady Rebels added one more run in their half of the fourth inning. The first run came after seventh grader Molly McKee tripled to leftfield. Couey then hit a fielder’s choice scoring McKee.
In the fourth, Baylee Hewitt singled to start the inning. Three batters later, Paisley Grisham doubled on a line drive to leftfield to score Hewitt with two outs.
The team hits the road on Saturday to take part in the SIA Invitational at Sharkey Issaquena Academy. Then they’ll travel to DeSoto Academy on Monday, August 21, and then to Tunica Academy on Tuesday, August 22, to start conference action.
