The 2023 season wrapped up for the Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans softball team. With only two wins, MDCC coaches are hard at work crafting the team for next season. Head Coach Oliva Burns, in her first season, will be on the recruiting trail all summer looking to build for the future.
“We’re going to be pretty solid. We had 11 players who actually played at the end of the year,” Coach Burns said. “I’m excited about new girls coming in to push the ones already here. Most of the girls I have worked really hard and things didn’t go as planned. I have all the freshmen coming back. It’s been a rough year.”
Coach Burns is looking to have more help on the mound next season.
“I have six pitchers signed and they play multiple positions. And the players signed have a good bit of power at the plate,” she said.
Freshman Madison Melton pitched 150-plus innings for the Lady Trojans. Coach Burns will be relying on her quite a bit for the 2024 season.
“She had a solid year pitching and she was pretty solid at the plate as well,” Coach Burns said.
The post season is in action for 10 teams in the MACCC and Louisiana. The Region 23 Tournament will be a double-elimination event hosted by the MACCC regular season champion. MACCC teams two through nine (2 vs. 9, 3 vs. 8, etc.) play best-of-three qualifying series May 4-6 at higher seeds’ home diamond.
