After opening the season with four wins, the MDCC Lady Trojans’ record suffered its first blemish with a 58-53 loss to Southwest Community College. The Lady Trojans led after the first period, 13-11 and then Southwest reversed that score in the second and the game was tied at halftime, 24-24. MDCC left their game in the locker room apparently and only put up five points in the third while giving up 20. A furious fourth quarter flurry comeback fell short as the Lady Trojans outscored Southwest 24-14 in the final quarter.
“We didn’t play good that third quarter. We turned it over like seven times and they literally scored on every turnover,” Head Coach Tangela Banks said. “And my two scorers hardly took a shot in that quarter. We tried to make a comeback but it didn’t work in our favor. You have to play all four quarters. With the turnovers, they got frustrated. It is what it is and they learned from it and have been going hard since then.”
Now 4-1 on the year, the Lady Trojans travel to Tougaloo to take on their JV team on Friday. After that is Thanksgiving break and then a cadre of tough opponents beginning with a trip to Northeast Mississippi Community College on Monday, November 27, followed by a home tilt with South Arkansas Community College on November 30.
“Northeast will be a good game because they have a couple of their players back,” Coach Banks said.
Looking at her players, she noted a few have been shining on the court.
“(Sophomore Cha’Myrean) Ellis has been playing well. She’s had a double-double. She plays small forward and the wing sometimes and sometimes center depending on who we are playing. Lauren Nelson is going to be a freshman to watch. She’s athletic and when she plays her game, when she does that, she’s really good.”
