Trey Goss has always felt at home at North Sunflower Academy. The 2009 alumnus was recently named the school’s athletic director and head football coach. Goss will also be tasked with teaching three classes. The Cleveland resident transferred from Cleveland High in 2008 and played football at NSA his junior and senior seasons. Goss had been working for the City of Boyle and is expected to take over the reins of the positions in late May.
“I love the school and when I transferred there I fell in love with it and it’s a smaller school and it just felt at home,” Coach Goss said. “Now I have three kids that go there and I coached Pee Wee football last year. I do a lot for the school just to give back.”
Coach Goss went to MDCC and took electrical classes after graduating high school and now the head football coach for both junior high and senior high will be in charge of the entire athletic program as the athletic director. He will be teaching physical education and a health class and possibly more.
“I’m ready to jump in and take it by the reins,” Coach Goss said. “I played football at North Sunflower under Head Coach Van Landingham and Coach Bill Matthews and Coach Michael Ward.”
The married father with a blended family of eight children is ready to put his stamp on the NSA athletic program and school.
“First and foremost, I want not just student-athletes but students in general to succeed in the classroom,” Coach Goss said. “I want the student-athlete to succeed on and off the field and be a leader in the school and make the right choices. I want to give back. I’ve been in their shoes. The ones moving up from Pee Wee know that I’m business on the field. I’m strict but I’m fair.”
In looking at his teams’ talent, he’s ready for some success.
“We’re going to have two really good seasons this upcoming year,” he said. “We have a lot of really good kids that come from really good families. We went undefeated with Pee Wee last year.”
In playing eight-man football, Coach Goss will have his teams ready.
“You have to be in shape. With a school like us, you have to play both sides of the ball,” Coach Goss said. “My big thing is ‘offense puts fans in the stands but defense wins championships.’ That was drilled in my head when I played at Cleveland High and when I transferred to North Sunflower.”
