There was a hill to climb, but at least that hill did exist.
For Thursday evening, there was still an opportunity for the Gentry High Rams baseball team to earn a State 5A playoff berth.
However, that opening into postseason play required a 10-run road victory by the Rams over the Yazoo City High Indians.
Carrying a 3-12 record into that game, the Rams will take on a 7-7-1 Yazoo City squad.
In their only meeting this season, the Indians recorded a 25-15 victory over the Gentry squad on the first day of April.
While results of Thursday’s game were unavailable at press time, the Rams earned their new-found opportunity by splitting a doubleheader against Canton High School.
Playing Monday evening at Canton High, the Rams began the twin bill in fine fashion with a clutch 9-4 victory over the Tigers.
However, the result of the nightcap saw the Rams suffer a 14-7 loss to the Tigers.
Should the young Gentry High squad’s season end Thursday evening, the future holds promise as only three seniors will be lost to graduation.
This group includes Semaj Attaway, Jordan Davis, and Kaiheem Saulsberry.
