Gentry High School head baseball Coach Eddie Ivory can probably relate to one of Yogi Berra’s unique observations: “We made too many wrong mistakes.”
For errors plagued the Rams’ baseball efforts this past week in a couple of games; however, the Rams responded by ending that span of action with a victory.
After cramming in a pair of baseball games last Saturday prior to Spring Break, the 3-4, 0-2 Gentry High Rams now eagerly await their next game.
The wait may seem like a long one for the players, however, as the next scheduled game is not set to occur until next Friday. That day’s home-date will be a 4 p.m. game against the Northside High School Alligators of Shelby.
Meanwhile, this past Saturday at Hollandale Simmons High, the Rams split their double-header against Greenville O’Bannon High and against the host Blue Devils.
The Rams ended that day’s action with a victory over the Simmons High squad as an 11-4 final score sent this non-regional game into the books.
“We played more as a unit this game”, noted Gentry Head Coach Eddie Ivory. “We still made a few errors but were able to outscore them.”
Elijah Powers led the Rams’ hitting attack with three hits, which included a double, triple, and two runs batted in.
Also strong at the plate this game with another three hits was Troy Griffin. The senior drilled three singles and scored three times.
On the mound, Charles Jennings was credited with the win as his three innings of work garnered five strikeouts.
Jennings also aided his own cause while at the plate by slapping a pair of singles and scoring twice.
In Saturday’s opening game the Rams fell by an 11-5 score to the Green Wave of O’Bannon High School.
“We once again suffered too many errors,” said Coach Ivory. “But we had a great pitching performance from Powers (seven strikeouts).”
Powers, Griffin, and Martevious Williams paced the Gentry High hitting attack with a pair of singles apiece.
Meanwhile, last Friday at Yazoo City High School, the Rams dropped an error-filled 13-3 decision to the Indians in this Region 3-4A clash.
While Powers’ double was one of his three hits in the game, Tyler Liddell added a double to go along with his single off the Yazoo City pitcher.
Tyler Wright closed out the Gentry High hitting leaders by adding his two singles to the offensive efforts.
