Win number one is now history, and the time has arrived for the Sunflower County Unity Bowl to be played.
For tonight, the Gentry High School football team and the football team from Ruleville will meet for the 52nd time in this long-running, cross-county rivalry.
With kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. in Ruleville, the 1-0 Gentry High Rams will take on an 0-1 team of Thomas Edwards High Tigers.
The Rams are fresh off last Saturday’s 37-6 on-the-road thrashing of Greenwood High School.
Meanwhile, last Friday night the Tigers suffered a 26-6 loss to Coahoma County High in Clarksdale.
Tonight’s Sunflower County clash, the second of three consecutive Gentry High games to be spent on the road, will continue a rivalry with the Tigers in which the Rams have dominated.
Last season’s 35-12 Gentry High victory was the fourth consecutive win
earned over the Tigers and improved the Rams’ series advantage to a 36-14-1 mark.
The Tigers enter this week’s game still hoping to improve on the 1-8 record earned last season.
In the Rams’ solid win over the Greenwood Bulldogs last Saturday, the Gentry High squad initially owned a 19-6 halftime lead.
However, the Rams dominated the second half of the game by outscoring the Bulldogs by a 18-0 score.
Scoring for Gentry with passing receptions were Bryce Young (7 yards), Henry Brown (15 yards), and Demetric Robinson (12 yards).
Two of the scoring passes were thrown by Anthony Brown while Mitch Davis also recorded a touchdown aerial.
On the ground, Jay Silas recorded a five-yard touchdown run while Henry Brown added a 13-yard scamper to the end zone.
