According to available records, it was 100 years ago when the first high school football game was played by a Ruleville-based team.
And once again, there will be football to be enjoyed in this north Sunflower County town tonight, with a home-field football game on tap to open the Thomas Edwards High Tigers’ 2024 season.
With kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m., the Tigers will compete with the Red Panthers of Coahoma County High School to see who begins their new season with a victory.
According to Edwards Head Coach Damaris Mitchell, who is entering his seventh year guiding the Tigers’ football program, “Coahoma graduated several players from last year. I think we’ll match up well. If we play mistake-free, we’re going to be a good team.”
For the Tigers, a win would also be a solid step toward improving on the 2-7 record earned last season.
As a bonus, a win would also avenge the 26-6 loss suffered to the Clarksdale-based Red Panthers in last year’s season-opener.
Coahoma County High would move on from that victory over the Tigers to post a 4-6 record.
Last year’s win over the Region 3-3A Thomas Edwards High Tigers improved the Region 2-3A member Red Panthers’ overall series record to a 9-6 advantage.
